Intro
French Vertical Flow constructed wetlands are the core engineering system behind wå-trädgård. Wastewater is dosed onto the surface of a planted filter bed and allowed to percolate vertically downward through layered media and root systems — mimicking, and accelerating, the way natural wetlands purify water. It’s the technology that lets us treat sewage and effluent without the tanks, blowers, and constant supervision a conventional plant demands.
How It Works
Wastewater is distributed evenly across the surface of the wetland cell → it flows vertically downward through the planted media bed → root systems and naturally occurring microbes break down organic matter and remove pollutants as the water percolates → clarified water is collected at the base and moved to the treated water tank for discharge or reuse.
Why Vertical Flow
Compared to horizontal-flow or purely surface-flow wetland designs, vertical flow beds:

Performance
Our French Vertical Flow systems consistently deliver 90–98%+ removal of BOD, COD, TSS, and Nitrogen — verified across live installations from 5 KLD to 150 KLD.
| Parameter | Conventional Systems (SBR/MBBR) | wå-trädgård (French Vertical Flow) |
|---|---|---|
| Capital Costs | High | Moderate to High |
| O&M Cost | Very High | 95% lower |
| Ease of Operation | Complex, skilled staff needed | Simple — a gardener can operate it |
| Energy Usage | High | Up to 95% lower |
| Sludge Handling | Continuous | Once every 15 years |
| Effective Life | 5–15 years | 50+ years |
